It began with a simple observation from 10-year-old Steven: “They risk their lives so that we can play soccer without having to worry about war.” This sentiment struck a chord with his Juventus Academy DC Metro 2014 Academy I Boys teammates, prompting the 5th graders to write letters thanking local veterans for their service.

Steven, along with his fellow players—including Michael Hidalgo, Nicolas Chelikowsky, Jack Winn, Isaac Carlesso, Hundson Hong, Henry Maddox, David Castro, Anagha Ezikpe, and Aidan Cameron—dedicated time away from the soccer field to express their gratitude. Under the guidance of Coach Emanuele Cocuzza—who supported the boys’ idea to write letters—these 5th graders began to write heartfelt messages to local veterans. In each letter, they thanked the veterans for their service and sacrifice, acknowledging that their freedoms, including playing the sport they love, are protected by the brave men and women who serve in the armed forces.

This act of service is a testament to the values instilled by Juventus Academy DC. Sports can be a powerful vehicle for teaching life lessons—teamwork, respect, and compassion. Personally, I’ve been playing soccer since kindergarten and continued through high school, representing both Potomac Soccer Blue and Winston Churchill Varsity soccer teams. That experience showed me how lessons learned on the field—discipline, leadership, and empathy—can translate into meaningful gestures beyond the sport.

In this case, the Juventus Boys set an example of how sports and service can intersect. Their handwritten letters recognized the sacrifices made by those who serve our country, reinforcing a key takeaway: being on a team isn’t just about winning games; it’s also about developing character and supporting the wider community.

Not only did these 5th graders gain a deeper appreciation for our veterans, but they also set an example for their peers: Community service and gratitude know no age limits. Reaching out with handwritten letters is a simple gesture, yet it fosters a meaningful connection across generations. The veterans who receive these letters feel seen and supported by the younger generation.

Bringing Soccer and Service Together

At its heart, soccer is about teamwork, qualities that shine brilliantly in these thoughtful acts. By taking the time to write letters, the Juventus Academy exemplifies the spirit of not just being good athletes, but also being good citizens.

In a world where so many are looking for ways to make a difference, these young soccer players remind us that small gestures of kindness have the power to bring people closer. Whether on the pitch or in their community, the Juventus Team stands as a shining example of sportsmanship.
