The spirit of High Schoolers for Front Liners (HSFL) has always been driven by the unwavering belief that young students possess the power to create significant community impact. Since our organization’s creation in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have continually tried to empower younger students, particularly middle and high school students, to make a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most.

With over 1,500 volunteers, HSFL has experienced tremendous growth and has donated over 50,000 items (including heart pillows, homemade masks, lap blankets, and veterans’ letters). More than anything else, however, the dedication of HSFL’s volunteers has been remarkable.

In the month of November, HSFL is extremely excited to highlight Viyana Marginean, as our outstanding volunteer for the Veterans Project. Viyana, an eighth-grader from Julius West Middle School, exemplifies the essence of our organization. From discovering HSFL as a platform for meaningful service to being recognized as the Best Letter Writer for the Veterans Project, Viyana reflects the impact that can be achieved when passion meets purpose.

Viyana’s journey with HSFL began as she searched for opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our country. The Veterans Project, in particular, struck a chord with her as it provided a platform to convey gratitude to those who have selflessly defended our nation.

I hope that my passion for drawing and the message I wanted to send will resonate with the recipients of my letters.

– Viyana Marginean, Best Letter Writer of the Month

Viyana’s exceptional commitment is clearly reflected in her letters. As she explains in an email interview, “[HSFL] challenged me to express my thoughts not only with my words but also with my drawings. I wanted each card to be perfect no matter how much time it took to complete. I hope that my passion for drawing and the message I wanted to send will resonate with the recipients of my letters.”

Viyana creates visually stunning cards (as seen on the left), ensuring that each one reflects her genuine appreciation for the veterans’ sacrifices. Her efforts have not only made a significant impact on the lives of our veterans but have also set a shining example for others to follow. These cards are all donated to the Veterans Affairs Center in Baltimore each month.

As Viyana points out, this project is more than just a chance to be creative; it’s an opportunity to show appreciation for those who have traded their comfort and well-being to ensure our safety. The veterans deserve to know that their efforts and determination are not overlooked, and Viyana’s work stands as a testament to the power of heartfelt gratitude. The Veterans Project is an open invitation to express your creativity for a cause that truly matters.

Congratulations, Viyana, on being recognized as the Best Letter Writer for the Veterans Project this month. Your passion, creativity, and genuine appreciation are an inspiration for us all!
