In the face of the global pandemic that struck in 2020, HSFL emerged as a non-profit organization that supported local communities.  Initially founded to provide homemade masks for frontline workers, the organization swiftly adapted its mission to address the evolving needs of patients. Witnessing the fading demand for masks after two years of dedicated service, HSFL transitioned to sewing heart pillows for patients in various hospitals. These pillows not only symbolize our unwavering support but also serve a crucial medical purpose in aiding the recovery of individuals undergoing cardiac procedures.

From Masks to Pillows That Heal:
What began as an urgent response to the shortage of protective gear for frontline workers soon turned into a mission of comfort and solace for patients in need. HSFL recognized the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those recovering from cardiac surgery.

The heart pillows crafted by HSFL have become a primary donation item for numerous hospitals, including institutions such as the VA Center and MedStar Washington Hospitals. These pillows not only carry symbolic value but also provide tangible benefits during the recovery process. As Genesis Healthcare System emphasizes, pressure plays a pivotal role in protecting the incision site following open heart surgery.

Understanding the Medical Benefits:
After undergoing a delicate cardiac procedure, patients are advised to avoid exerting excessive force on the sternum area, which holds their breastbone together. Research indicates that a single cough exerts approximately 60 pounds of pressure against the sternum, while a forceful sneeze subjects it to as much as 90 pounds of pressure. Such intense pressure poses a risk of breaking the internal wires that support the breastbone, necessitating further surgical intervention.

By firmly clutching the heart pillow against their chest, patients can apply an additional layer of pressure that counteracts jolting movements caused by coughing, sneezing, or even simple everyday motions. The pillow acts as a safeguard, reducing pain and providing stability by securely holding the incision and the sensitive skin surrounding it in place. In doing so, it offers much-needed relief and promotes a smoother healing process for patients recovering from cardiac surgery.

What began as a mission to support frontline workers during the pandemic quickly transformed into a new endeavor, sewing heart pillows for patients in need. We hope to continue to touch the lives of patients and healthcare providers alike, demonstrating the profound impact that a dedicated community can make in times of adversity!
